GANPATI MANTRA
Significance of the Ganesha Form Ganesha’s head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha’s left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties. The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in
If you haven’t heard of them it’s because the largely affluent community keeps a low profile. They burst into the news, though, when terrorists opened fire at Akshardham Temple, Gandhinagar, in September 2002.
Grand architecture
A sect that is more known for its opulent-looking temples that number over 500 worldwide — most of them major tourist attractions — had humble beginnings in early 19th century Gujarat. Today it has over five million followers in five continents. But why the ostentation in architecture, you ask, and pat comes the reply: “You want to build the best house for your wife and children whom you love, don’t you? We love Bhagwan Swaminarayan and so we want to build the best temple for him.” Nice, but it has something to do with the fact that the Patels, the most wealthy community in Gujarat, form the core of the Swaminarayan movement. NRI Patels are the main donors.
Guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the present nonagenarian spiritual head of the BAPS Swaminarayan sect (the Swaminarayan Sampradaya has evolved to five sub-sects) who responds to emails from followers with lightning speed, reportedly enjoys the patronage of the British royals. Queen Elizabeth II is said to have sought his help in sorting out differences between Charles and Diana.
The Swaminarayan Sampradaya came into being with the incarnation of Swaminarayan, born Ghanshyam Pande in Chhapaiya near Ayodhya in 1781. He founded the sect in 1802. His followers equate him with the Supreme Being and worship him as God.
Is the community Hindu? “Very much so. The main difference is that Bhagwan Swaminarayan is worshipped as the Supreme Godhead. As a result, more significance is given to scriptures, festivals, places of pilgrimage and vows given by him,” says Janak Bhai Dave, chief PR officer and director, research, at the Akshardham Temple, Delhi. Like all Hindus, they bow down to many deities, but worship and pray to Bhagwan Swaminarayan. “In most Swaminarayan mandirs you find idols of Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita, Shiva-Parvati, Hanuman and Ganapati, but in the central shrine, you will always find the murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan,” he adds.
